Dinosaur Footprints at Lat Pa Chat Rock Bed Dinosaur Footprints at Lat Pa Chat Rock Bed : North of Phu Wiang mountain range near Tat Fa waterfall is a large grassy rock bed in a 250 square metres area. On the rock surfaces are dinosaur footprints of different sizes, and traces of movements shown as waves by various types of ancient creatures such as worms.

Activities : Cave/Geological Touring

Dinosaurs A geologist from a uranium exploration project, Department of Mineral Resources, discovered the first dinosaurs fossils in Thailand in 1976. Further research and exploration were carried out leading to the discovery of nine fossil sites. The importance of Phu Wiang dinosaurs lies in the fact that they are new genus and species such as herbivorous dinosaurs (Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae), carnivorous dinosaurs (Siamotyrannus isanensis and Siamosaurus suteethoni), and ostrich dinosaurs (Ginareemimus). Visitors can see the dinosaur remains at four of these sites.

Excavation Site No.1 Phu Pratu Tima : The discovery at Phu Pratu Tima was the first dinosaur fossils found in Thailand. The fossils found include left and right femur, a shin bone and 6 hip bones. In addition, 3 cervical vertebrae, 2 thoracic vertebrae, and 10 pieces of a rib cage, 5 collected and 5 scattered, were also found. The specie is a large dinosaur measuring 15 metres in length and 3 metres in height. It walked on four feet and had long neck and tail. This is the world’s new plant-eating dinosaur specie (Sauropod) named Phuwiangosaurua sirindhornae. The genus name came from the location of Phuwiang District, and the specie was named in honour of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn with the gracious approval of Her Royal Highness.

Another interesting fact is that more than 10 carnosaur teeth were found in the area as well. It is believed that the sauropods were eaten by the carnosaurs thus some of their bones were scattered and buried by silt from flooding.

Excavation Site No. 2 Tham Chia : This site was excavated in 1989. The fossils found here comprised 6 cervical vertebrae of a herbivore dinosaur in a row. On 3 November 1989, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visited the site, and on 25 March 1990, Princess Kalyani Wattana , also paid a visit. Damages were done to the bones wrapped in plaster casts when they were plied open, causing the bones to slip out of place and could not be repaired. Later on in 1993, a building was constructed over the site.

Excavation Site No. 3 Huai Pratu Tima : The excavation of this site began in 1993. Several vertebrae and rib cages of herbivores were found buried in hard sandstone.

Excavation Site No. 9 Hin Lat Yao : The excavation began in 1993. A variety of dinosaur bones, including vertebrae, a left hip bone, and 10 tail vertebrae, has been discovered in red sandstone. The fossils are dated back to the early Cretaceous period and appeared to be ancestor to those of the Tyrannosaurus (T-Rex) species, whose length was about 6 metres. It is the world's new dinosaur specie, Siamotyrannus isanensis, which is named after Thailand, or Siam, and the Northeast region, Isan.
