Phu Kradueng National Park






BACKGROUND/TOPGRAPHY/CLIMATE
Phu Kradueng National Park, situated in Si Than Sub-district, Phu Kradueng District, Loei Province, has been designated as the 2nd national park of Thailand on November, 23, 1962. It covers an area of 348.12 Kilometers (217,575 rai) with 60 Kilometers (37,500 rai) of plateau on the top of mountain.
The elevation of Phu Kradueng is between 400-1,200 meters with the summit point of 1,316 meters at Khok Moei. In general, Phu Kradueng is the sandstone mountain consisting of an abundance of flora and fauna and the fullness of cliffs, savanna, streams and waterfalls other than that it is still the head watershed of Lam Nam Phong River which is one lf the most important rivers in Northeastern Thailand.
According to its high elevation and climatic condition, the weather on the mountaintop is cool all year round. Sometimes, in the winter. temperature may drop to freezing point. So, it is the most incentive to visitors who would like to be the Phu Kradueng conqueror at least once of their life.


Geographical Features



Phu Kradung is a sandstone mountain with a vast plateau on top, surrounded by smaller hills. The highest peak is 1,316m above sea level. It is the watershed for the Pong River, which feeds the reservoir of Ubonrat Dam and Nong Wai Dam in Khon Kaen Province. The plateau of Phu Kradung is composed of pine forest and grassland, which have a variety of flowers, creeks, waterfalls and rocky fields. These features make in the park most pleasant.


Weather Condition



Phu Kradung is a cool and comfortable all year round. The average temperature is 15 degrees celsius. In the cool season, temperatures of the coldest nights reaches feezing. In the rainy season, the weather can change quicky. Fog and low clouds tend to hang low over the landscape. Cliffs may collapse under their own weight after the soil which underlies the sandstone cap is eroded by heavy rain. Heavy rains can also cause flash floods in the streams which run down the mountain. Thus, the park will be closed during June and September every year for visitors safety and forest recovering.


Varieties of Plants and Wild Animals



Phu Kradung has a variety of forest types including dry dipterocarp, mixed deciduous, hill evergreen, and pine. Dominant tree species are Siamese sal (Shorea obtusa), Shorea siamensis, Diospyros spp., Lagerstroemia spp., Podocarpis nerriifolius, maple, Pinus murkusii, and Pinus kesiya. The grass fields support a variety of flowers, such as Hydrocera triflora, Torenia fournieri and marigolds. These flowers bloom at different times of the year. Some grows well in the rocky fields including Dendrobium sp. Close to the ground are ferns, mosses, and Serissa sp. Which is an abundant and beautiful moss. Phu Kradung, with its variety of forest types and vegetation, provides abundant food for wildlife community, including elephants, bears, sambar deer, barking deer, serong, squirrel, fox. And wild dogs. Birds include White-rumped Shama, Black Eagle, Silver Pheasant, Red-wattled Lapwing, Chinese Francolin, and minivets. There is one rare species of turtle called "Tao Poo Loo" or "Tao Hang" which has a long tail and lives in high elevations along streams in the forests. It can also be found in Cambodia and Lao PDR.

By Car

BY CAR. Take a car pass Saraburi, Pak Chong district, after which you turn left into highway No.201 via Chaiyaphum province, Phu Khiao district . Then, turn left to highway No.12 passing Chum Phae district and turn right into highway N0.201 passing Phu Pha Man district and Pha Nok Khao, after which you turn left into highway No.2019 which leads to the park.


By Airplane

BY AIR. There are daily flights from Bankok to Khon Kaen and BanKok to Udon Thani. For more flight and airline information, call 0-2628-2000, 0-2515-9999, 0-2267-2999 and 1318.


By Train

BY TRAIN. Get on the train at Hua Lamphong Raiway Station and get off at Khon Kaen Railway Station. Then, take the Khon Kaen-Loei bus and get off at Pha Nok Khao or Phu kradueng Bus Terminal and get off at Pha Nok Khao or Phu Kradueng Bus Terminal and then take the local bus ( Song Thaeo) to the park. By Bus

BY BUS. Take the Bangkok-Loei bus at the Northeastern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) and get off at Pha Nok Khao and then take the local bus (Song Thaeo) to the Park. For move bus information, call 0-2936-2852-66.

Tourist Attractions


Phu Kradueng National Park is not just a destination for tourists to exploit their own pleasure in order to conquer the summit, but it is still an invaluable sise of natural heritage for the next genenration and the source of knowledge for everyone The flora communiy of Phu Kradueng National Park can be classified into 5 types, hill evergreen forest, pine forest and tropical savanna. Beside the temperate tree such as two-needled pine, three-needled pine, oak and maple that can be seen on the mountaintop, there also exisits a rich varity of orchids and charming flower which differently blossoms season by season, for instance, White differently blossoms season by season, for instance, Which and Red Roses, Kradum Ngoen,Krachao Khao and SomPae. In addition, Phu Kradung is the habitat of more than 266 wildlife species such as Asiatic Black Bear, Barking Deer, sambar Deer, Wold Pig and Birds as well as rarely found reptiltes such as the Snapper.


Beautiful Nature

Anodad Pool This is the natural pond with stream flow all year round and with crystal clear water showing reflections of the scenery of the nearby foliage. Two - needled and three - needled pines grow profusely along the edge of the pond.

Gaow Pool is near the head of Thansawan stream. This pool is deep, but not very wide. The water is so clear that the bottom rock is visible. From this area there is a trail which leads through a flat rocky area scattered with "Reet" flowers, purple and yellow in color.

Penpobmai Waterfall is a cascade over a sharp rock. In the cool season, maples will drop their red leaves to the water's surface. This is the source of anther waterfall, Penpob waterfall, named after a world champion boxer from Thailand who went to train at Phu Kradung in order to get used to cold weather before traveling abroad to temperate countries.

Pha Lomsak or Lomsak Cliff It is approximately 9 km from the visitor center. This point is the most well known for enjoying the glorious sunset. It is an overhanging cliff, with a pine tree branching out and protruding horizontally many meters beyond the edge of the cliff and the most photographed area.

Pha Mark Duk This is amazing poit that sunrise and sunset can be seen at the same place during November to February. It is approximately 2.3 km from the visitor center.

Pha Nok Ann (Swallow Cliff) is 2km east of the office. A single pine tree grows close to the edge of the cliff, where visitors like to watch the sun rise over the expansive fields and chain of mountains below. From here Pa Nok Kow can be clearly seen. Nearby is a large patch of rhodadendron growing among the rocks. These flowers bloom in March and April.

Phon Phop Waterfall Local just about 342 m to the south of Phon Phop Wallterfull. The water tumble down three layers of rock terraces into a large basin below. Many species of birds come here to play in the basin.

Phon-Phop Waterfall It is about 558 m from Phen Phop Mai Waterfall. This waterfall name is to give honor to Phon Kingphet, the First World Champion Boxer of Thailand, who discovered it. Before the match, he came to Phu Kradueng to train and familiarize himself with the cold climate. The water flows over a stair like course.

Pra-ong Waterfall It looks like Thanyai waterfall but smaller than. It is not big and falling from the cliff. There is water a whole year.

Tat Hong Waterfall is part of Nampong Stream, which runs down the northeast side of the mountain. Both sides of this waterfall are steep rock and the deafening sound of the waterfall can be heard from far away. There are many other waterfalls, cliff, and points of interest. To fully enjoy the park, a minimum of three days is suggested for your visit.

Thamyai Waterfall It is about 1.4 km from the visitor center. Under the waterfall is a large cave. From inside it tourists can look out to see the waters tumbling down. There is beautiful rock garden and rich in vegetation surrounded the waterfall. In winter, shedding maple leave add some red to the area.

Tran-sawan Waterfall From Thanyai Waterfall walk to the junction toward Tran-sawan waterfall is only 106 kilometers from the accommodation.

Tum So-Tai Waterfall It is 500 m from Tham So Nuea Waterfall. The water drops from a very high cliff down a deep gorge into a basin below, surrounded by beautiful setting of rocks.

Tum So-nor Waterfall It is about 5.7 km far from the visitor center. The water cascades down a smooth well-weathered rock surface into a basin below with boulders scattered around.

Wang-Kwang Waterfall It is a waterfall where nearest the accommodation just only 750 meters away. It is not very high and looks like a hole down the hill. Nearby the forest, there are many deer so that this waterfall is called “Wang-Kwang Waterfall”
