Rafflesia Kerrii Meijer Among all flora in the world, Bua Phut or Rafflesia is the largest bloom. Rafflesia amoldii, found in lndonesia, is about 100 cm. in diameter. it is one of nature's wonders when this kind of plants displays its red blooms isn lush evergreen rainforest. People who live in the South call this species Bua Tum or Bua Phut. it is a parasitic plant with fiber-like tissue. it subsists on roots and trunks of the wild grape family known as Yan Kai Tom (Tetrastigma sp.) Bua Phut sucks nutrient and water from its host. We can spot this mysterious species only when its reproductive period arrives. Their small buds appear along its host's trunk. it takes lt takes about 9 months for these miniature buds to grow larger and larger like a giant cabbage. After this, the flowers only bloom for 7 days. Since the male and female flowers are separated, the blooming must be coincidental. This means that there is a relatively short time for insects to pollinatal. the female flower. With this natural comstraint, Bua Phut is on the endangered species list. Local Malaysian, Indonesian, and Thai believe that the bloom of Bua Phut has curative power. Flower buds boiled with water can help restore the uterus of post-natal's woman to a normal condition. However, western medical science does't recognize any of Bua Phut's medicinal properties. In Thailand, Bua Phut can be found in the area of Isthmus of Kra in Ranong Province and down along the Phuket Ranges to Narathiwat's border. Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani boasts the largest source of Bua Phut. The wonderful blossome take turn displaying their charming beauty all year round. The most perfect time to appreciate its wonder runs between November and April since trkking through the jungle is rather convenient. But Khao Sok National Park has encountered the painful experience of losing this species once abundant at Khuan Luk Chang because of visitor's ignorance. Its hosts, young buds, snd small blooms were trampled again and again because tourists want to get close to the miraculous posy to take the pictures. As a result, the populations of Bua Phut once thriving at the kilometer marker 111 and Khao Song Nong is also ever-decreasing. Beside, Bua Phut flowers is decreasing in size at an alarming rate in the last 2 years. (2002-2003). Khao Sok National Park and the National Park, wildlife, and Plant Conser vation Department then joined forces together to take an urgent measure to rescue the flora from disappeared. Official team surveys the forest and make fences around area where Bua Phut flourishes. Now getting close to the blooming flowers is prohibited. Elevated foot path is built so visitors can appreciate their beauty at specific distance, hence protecting Yan Kai Tom vines and Bua Phut from being crushed and ruined. Besides local villagers are trained to be amateur guides escorting visitors to see the giant flowers. Thus generating extra income for the community. Most importantly, villagers can develop strong attachment to the natural enviromnent and feel the need to cherish and protect it for sustainable use and development.
